Racing Santander thrown out of next year’s Copa Del Rey

Spanish club Racing Santander have been kicked out of next year's Copa Del Rey. The club's players refused to their second leg match against Real Sociedad after having taken to the field last Thursday.

  • The players from the club have not been paid for months and are in difficult financial currently. The players have said that they will not play until the board resigns.



    Although no players have been punished individually the club have also been fined 3000 euros for their actions.



    The club's player though have received support from city's mayor. This is what Inigo de la Serna, the mayor of Santander, told Cadena Ser,



    "Yesterday they offered an example of professionalism and consistency,"



    "We are proud of each one of them.



    "What happened was the beginning of change at the club and it was necessary.



    "I advocate an immediate transition of ownership, peacefully, so we can return to talking about Racing's successes and not these unpleasant situations."



    Incidentally Santander's opponents Real Sociedad have been granted the win and will take on Barcelona in the semifinal of the cup.
