The Sporting Lisbon defender has been strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent weeks, but the Primeira Liga giants are thought to have asked United to add a player as make-weight to the deal.

A report from The Times suggests that United will switch their attention to Stuttgart star Antonio Rudiger, if their move for Rojo breaks down.

Rojo is currently under suspension following his refusal to train last week in an attempt to force his transfer to United.
