The Argentine defender has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, but the Red Devils are yet to agree a transfer fee with Valencia for his signature.

It is understood that Los Che are unwilling to offload their star asset for anything less than £35m this summer.

According to Superdeporte, City officials have met up with super agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal, and a formal bid could be made for the centre-back this week.

United are also expected to step up their pursuit for the talented defender.
