Newcastle United are understood to have made a summer offer for Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan, The People reports.

The Magpies boss Steve McClaren is understood to have made a formal bid for the Uruguayan striker, as he seeks to bolster his attack front before the transfer deadline.

According to The People, the Magpies had made an &pound11m bid for the 22-year-old striker, but it was swiftly rebuffed by the Ligue 1 side.

However, Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol is thought to be lining up a replacement for Rolan, as an improved bid from the Magpies could tempt the club into offloading their star asset before the closure of the transfer window.
