Sunderland are understood to be closing on a deal for Rennes striker Ola Toivonen, according to reports.

The Sweden international had been linked with a move to the Black Cats during his time with PSV Eindhoven.

Sunderland Echo now claims that the Black Cats are in advanced negotiations with Rennes to sign the talented marksman.

It is added that Rennes are keen on offload the striker on a permanent basis as they look to reduce their wage bill for the ongoing season.

Toivonen joined the Ligue 1 side from PSV Eindhoven in 2014.
