Manchester United are not entirely convinced that Eddie Howe is the right man to replace Michael Carrick as the next head coach.
Carrick was widely fancied to be sacked after United's 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, but that has not happened.
The English tactician has been handed a lifeline, and he has another three games to save his job by turning around the club's fortunes.
Howe was previously mentioned as a top candidate to succeed Carrick, but some of the club's hierarchy have second thoughts about him.
There is not a universal approval regarding his credentials and the club could lean towards a different manager if they part ways with Carrick.
United are currently on an eight match winless streak in all competitions and will be aiming to put an end to the dreadful run at Chelsea.
They did the double over the Blues last season, and should go into the game with a point to prove after the dreadful showing against Bournemouth.
