Wenger: stop transfer window

Wenger: stop transfer window

19 January 2008 - 02:58

Arsene Wenger has called for the January transfer window to be scrapped, believing that it gives clubs an unfair advantage. Wenger also insisted that he would rather stick with his kids than fork out for a player to improve his squad.

  • Wenger, meanwhile, maintained his stance that he will keep faith with his youngsters, and warned that the unprecedented record figure already reached is set to increase.

"The spending is not over," he said. "Now Keegan has arrived at Newcastle, they will be involved as well. Maybe you should ban the transfer window. It is not necessarily a good idea because it can change the force inside the League. For example, teams who you have not played against at all are stronger. To me, it is not fair."

Wenger has not bought a player in the January window for two years and admitted his regret at having sold one of his younger players, Lassana Diarra, who joined Portsmouth for £5.5 million on Thursday. Wenger said: "I regret that he has gone and I wish him well."

And summing up the panic the window provokes, he added: "He [Diarra] was impatient and I decided to open the door because I have players in that position. I believe he was impatient especially because he had known a situation like that before at Chelsea. When he had exactly the same problem again, he panicked a little bit."
