Higuaín flies to Turin ahead of Juventus switch

27 July 2016 - 11:19

Gonzalo Higuaín has flown to Turin to seal his €90 million switch from Napoli to Juventus.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • The Argentinian striker was welcomed at Turin airport by droves of Juventus supporters chanting his name.

Higuaín is in Turin to put pen to paper on a €7.5 million a year contract that will make him the highest paid player in Serie A, taking him a full €1 million per year clear of AS Roma's Daniele De Rossi.

The move will also see Higuaín become the most expensive player in Italian football history, with his €90 million fee smashing the long standing record set by Hernan Crespo's €56 million move from Parma to Lazio in 2000.

Higuaín was in outstanding form for Napoli last season, and his 36 Serie A goals from 35 games saw him break the all-time record for most goals scored in a single Serie A season. His goals helped fire Napoli into title contention, before eventually finishing runners-up to Juventus, who sealed their fifth consecutive scudetto.

The former River Plate and Real Madrid striker will now join the Old Lady who are building towards a Champions League challenge next season, having reached the final in 2015, only to lose out to Luis Enrique's FC Barcelona.

At 28 years old, the fee Juventus are paying for Higuaín has been labelled excessive by many. But if he is able to deliver a Champions League title for Juve, his price tag will seem a bargain.
