Former Juventus defender Martin Caceres has joined Southampton on a free transfer ahead of their EFL Cup final against Manchester United next week.
The Uruguay international was due to join the Saints earlier in the month, but the club were seeking to test his fitness extensively before offering him a contract.
The 29-year-old, who has also featured for the likes of Barcelona and Sevilla will add the much-needed experience in the heart of the defence after Virgil van Dijk sustained a long-term knee problem.
Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have had a mixed bag in the top flight of late, and Caceres could be expected to get straight into the lineup for what is a season-defining game versus United at the Wembley next weekend.
Caceres had not played professional football for more than a year due to fitness concerns, and this urged Southampton to play the waiting time before offering him a short-term contract until the end of the season.
