The draw for the final 16 of the Europa League has been made today, and England's only remaining team in the competition, Manchester United, will be confident of progressing to the quarter final stage.
After Tottenham Hotspur's defeat last night, United were left to represent the Premier League alone in the next round. Jose Mourinho and his team will have wanted to avoid other contenders for the competition such as Lyon, Roma and Schalke. He got his wish, as Manchester United were drawn against Russian outfit FC Rostov, who currently sit in seventh place in the Russian Premier League.
Here is the whole draw:
Celta Vigo V FC Krasnodar
Apoel Nicosia V Anderlecht
Schalke V Borussia Monchengladbach
Roma V Lyon
FC Rostov V Manchester United
Olympiakos V Besiktas
Gent V Genk
FC Copenhagen V Ajax
To make the draw even more favourable for United, the four teams who many expect to challenge them for the trophy in May, Schalke, Monchengladbach, Roma and Lyon, will clash with eachother, meaning that two of them will not make the quarter final stage. Gent's reward for there win over Tottenham is a tie against fellow Belgians Genk. The first leg for Manchester United will take place in Russia on Thursday 9th March, with the return leg the following week.
