Arsenal activate release clause of Nigerian striker

Arsenal have moved a step closer to signing Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru after having triggered the £6.9m release clause on his contract.

  • The 19-year-old currently plys his trade for Belgian minnows KAS Eupen for whom he bagged 25 goals and 14 assists during the 2016/17 season.

    Onyekuru has openly suggested that he is a huge admirer of the Gunners, and his performances have certainly captured the attention of the north London, who are prepared to sign him this summer, Sky Sports understands.

    The teenager had not featured for Nigeria at the senior level prior to his call-up this month, and he is in line to earn his first competitive against Togo in an international friendly on Thursday.

    As per Sky Sports, the FA Cup holders are confident of wrapping up a deal for the promising striker in the next couple of days as they seek to intensify their search for other top-class recruits.

    Meanwhile, an exclusive from Soccer Nigeria yesterday cited that the player would receive wages of around £35,000 a week on his arrival to the Emirates.

    Arsenal are understood to have fended off interest from the likes of Everton, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion from England, while German giants Borussia Dortmund were also keen on his signature.
