Manchester United have been dealt a blow as long-term target Radja Nainggolan looks set to sign a new contract with Roma.
Nainggolan enjoyed his best ever season for Roma, scoring 15 goals in 46 games and guiding Roma to a second place finish in the Serie A behind Juventus. The 29-year-old's performances attracted interests from top clubs in Europe, with Manchester United looking to acquire his services to shore up their midfield.
Ex-manager Louis Van Gaal previously tried to bring The Belgian to Old Trafford in 2015 for £29 million but a move failed to materialise. Â
However, Nainggolan now looks set to remain at Roma and snub Manchester United, according to Italian paper Football Italia.Â
The report stated that Nainggolan has "kept his promise to ignore calls from other clubs" and will remain in Roma next season. The midfielder will sign a new contract with the Rome club that will bump his annual salary up to €4 million per year from €3 million in his current deal. His new contract is also expected to keep him at the club until 2021.Â
The news will be a major blow to Jose Mourinho who viewed Nainggolan as a perfect replacement for the aging Michael Carrick.
