Seven subs from next season

Seven subs from next season

08 February 2008 - 00:04

The Premier League has announced that there will be a new rule implemented that will allow Premiership sides to have seven players on the bench for all games from the beginning of next season.

  • Chelsea eyeing marquee signing before deadline
  • Man City preparing £100m bid for Chelsea midfielder
  • Premier League officials were concerned at the time that the plans could favour clubs with larger squads.

But the changes have now been given the green light, and with Premier League voting rules requiring that at least 14 of the 20 member clubs back any suggested rule changes, it appears that those initial concerns have been laid to rest.

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the Premier League clubs in agreement with the idea. Chairman Daniel Levy welcomed the move, as well as claiming some of the credit for the change: "We at Tottenham Hotspur have promoted and lobbied for this rule change for some time and we are absolutely delighted our proposal was supported by member clubs."
