Birmingham regret Upson sale

11 February 2008 - 00:14

Birmingham chairman David Gold has admitted he regrets selling Matthew Upson to West Ham. The player has emerged as one of Fabio Capello's favorite central defenders in his new look lineup, and despite Birmingham being happy with the fee they received, the chairman of the Blues admitted they do miss the centre back.

  • "I don't feel anger, just disappointment that he went because he is a great player," said Gold. "That is proven by the fact he is back in the England squad and played the other night against Switzerland.

"It was just disappointing we couldn't hang on to Upson. I don't hold any animosity towards him. He was a good player and he is a proper gentleman. We got good money for him in the end."
