Arjen Robben announces retirement from international football

10 October 2017 - 22:09

Arjen Robben has called time on his international career with the Netherlands following their 2-0 win over Sweden in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.

  • Arsenal linked with new shotstopper as backup to Raya
  • Juventus and Roma to battle for 20yo Arsenal star

  • The Netherlands needed to beat Sweden by a minimum scoreline of 7-0 in order to reach the World cup playoffs, but their opponents shut up shop for the second half of the game.

Robben opened the scoring with a penalty which resulted from a Victor Lindelof handball before he crafted a wonderful one-time shot to make it 2-0 before the break.

The Oranje could not put more pressure on Sweden in the second period, and ultimately had to settle for pride as their visitors reached the play-off phase of the tournament.

Speaking after the game, the Bayern Munich forward confirmed his retirement from the international scene, he said, via The Mirror: "I want to focus on my club [career] now. It's a good time to pass the torch to the next generation."
