Manchester United have reportedly earmarked Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele as a possible replacement for contract rebel Marouane Fellaini.
Fellaini has declined to sign a new deal with United beyond June and he is widely expected to leave Old Trafford on a free at the end of the month.
With this in mind, Mourinho is said to be eyeing a young back-up option for the midfield and Ndombele has been identified as one of the summer targets, according to L'Equipe.
The 21-year-old made 42 appearances for Lyon on loan from Amiens during the previous campaign and the French club have since signed him permanently after sealing their qualification to the Champions League.
Nonetheless, they are prepared to sanction his potential sale this summer, should one of his admirers be willing to match their £44m asking price before the beginning of next season.
Ndombele has also been linked with the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool and it will be interesting to see whether any of the sides are prepared to enter a transfer tussle for the defensive midfielder.
