Loris Karius has said that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wanted him to stay at Anfield before his move to Besiktas.
The goalkeeper joined the Turkish side on a two-year loan after losing his place to new arrival Alisson Becker.
Speaking at his unveiling, Karius said, the Daily Star reports: "He [Klopp] told me he would like to have me in the squad because he wants to have the best quality players."
Karius was Liverpool's first choice goalkeeper last season, but after his blunders cost Liverpool the Champions League final in May, the German's end as a regular started.
He made things worse for himself by committing more blunders when pre-season games started, effectively convincing fans and the club that he can't be trusted with a starting role at the moment.
His replacement Alisson is the first choice goalkeeper of the Brazilian national team, and is yet to concede a goal in the Premier League for the Reds this term.
Liverpool will face Leicester City in the Premier League this weekend, and Alisson is expected to start with Simon Mignolet on the bench.
