Manchester United plan new contract for Jose Mourinho favourite

Manchester United have reportedly decided to proceed with discussions over a new long-term contract with experienced defender Chris Smalling.

  • AC Milan exploring deal for Chelsea right-back
  • Chelsea midfielder on his way to Serie A?
  • The England international has made over 300 appearances during the course of his United career but his future remains under question with his contract expiring in eight months' time.

According to The Mail, United do have the option of a 12-month extension clause on his existing deal but they are keen to secure his future with the club for the long-term.

Smalling found himself on the bench during the opening two league matches but he has since been ever-present under Jose Mourinho in the top-flight despite the average defensive record of the team.

Irrespective of Smalling's situation, United are likely to push to pursue a new central defender when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.

Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar has been earmarked as the prime target for United, though it remains to be seen whether they will match the Nerazzurri's £70m price tag.
