Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close watch on the proceedings of Alex Grimaldo, who is presently in the ranks of Portuguese side Benfica.

  • The left-sided defender has made over 100 appearances for the Primeira Liga giants since making the move from Barcelona three years ago, and his performances have previously caught the radar of Juventus.

According to Tuttosport, the Mancunian giants are tracking the progress of the 23-year-old left-back and they could be tempted to make an approach when the transfer window reopens.

It is added that Benfica will demand at least £35m for the former La Masia graduate, considering they owe around 15 percent of any future sale fee to former club Barcelona.

United have done business with Benfica in the past with the signing of Victor Lindelof and the potential arrival of Grimaldo should add competition for places on the left side of the backline.

At present, Luke Shaw remains the undisputed choice for the position but the hierarchy seem keen on adding another recruit, who can keep the Englishman working hard to maintain his starting spot.
