Manchester United have agreed a contract extension with midfielder Juan Mata following weeks of negotiations with the player's representative.
The Spaniard had been reluctant to pen a new contract earlier in the year after the club declined to offer him more than a 12-month extension on his deal which was due to expire in June.
However, following a series of discussions, the club have finally agreed on a multi-year deal with the 31-year-old with the option of another 12 months if required.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that Juan Mata has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2021, with the option to extend for a further year," a statement read on the club's official website.
Mata has been reduced to a squad player role in the past couple of seasons but he has nonetheless remained an important figure with the vast Premier League experience under his shoulders.
Mata has bagged 45 goals and 37 assists for the Red Devils during his five years with the club. He made 16 league starts for the club in the recently-concluded campaign.
