Chelsea could miss out on signing Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, suppose they fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.
The west London side have remained in the top four since October and they are currently third on the table with 60 points on the board.
However, they face the prospect of being leapfrogged by both Leicester City and Manchester United by the conclusion of the current gameweek.
According to BILD's Christian Falk, the Blues hold a keen interest in signing Havertz, but they would require the assurance of Champions League football to convince him to join them.
Should Leicester City and Manchester United win their games in hand, the Blues will drop into the fifth position. They could still qualify for the Champions League with a fifth-placed finish, suppose Manchester City's European ban is upheld.
The Cityzens have already appealed against the two-year ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and they are set to know the verdict of the case on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the Blues can also cement a Champions League berth by winning the elite competition this term. That is currently looking a difficult task after their 3-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the round of 16.
