Rangers into the UEFA semi

10 April 2008 - 22:11

Rangers secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in Portugal to earn themselves a place in the semi final of the UEFA Cup thanks to goals from Jean-Claude Darcheville and Steven Whittaker.

  • Rangers had a decent first half but Sporting Lisbon weren't giving anything away and retorted with some chances on the break making it a fairly even first half.

The break for the travelling team came in the 60th minute when Davis swept in an immaculately weighted pass from the right and Darcheville slot the ball home.

Rangers clinched it in the 91st minute when Whittaker picked up the ball on the halfway line and weaved through a tired defence to slot the ball past Sporting's Rui Patricio.

    Smith praises his battlers

Boss Walter Smith praised Rangers after qualifying for the first time in 36 years: "We played very well from the start of the game and kept possession of the ball better than we have done in recent games."
