Chelsea are working behind the scenes to extend the contract of Thiago Silva beyond the current campaign, Fabrizio Romano reports.

  • The Brazilian joined the Blues on a free transfer last summer and he has proved a quality addition to their central defence.

Despite turning 36, he has shown no signs of slowing down and he is regarded as the most important player at the back.

His current deal expires at the end of the season, but talks are underway to prolong his stay for another campaign at least.

Earlier this term, it was revealed that there is a 12-month extension clause on his contract, but it can only be triggered through a mutual agreement.

Silva has made 21 appearances for the Blues this term, out of which 17 have come in the Premier League. He has bagged two goals.

He is currently out on the sidelines with a thigh injury and is set to miss the club's next matches across all competitions.
