  • The Blues wanted to sign an elite centre-back this summer, and it was widely reported that Sevilla's Jules Kounde was the prime target.

They were hot on the trail of the Frenchman in the final weeks of the transfer window, but a suitable deal failed to materialise.

The European champions are expected to return for Kounde in January, but reports claim that he was not their number one target.

According to RMC Sport, the Blues were initially keen on landing Marquinhos this summer, and were willing to pay £85m for his services.

However, Les Parisiens made it clear that the Brazil international would not be leaving the club for any price during the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Marquinhos had a similar stance on staying. The club captain did not ponder over the prospect of moving to the Premier League.

Chelsea ended up making a £42m bid for Kounde, but Sevilla refused to sell him for less than £60m. They may need to pay the same in January.
