The Blues were heavily linked with the Dutch star during the summer, but a deal did not materialise for his services.

The club wanted a solid deputy for Reece James at right wing-back, but ran out of budget after big spending elsewhere.

It is now reported by Gazzetta dello Sport that the Blues will return for the 26-year-old when the transfer window reopens.

Inter consider the Dutchman as a vital player in their starting XI, but they have not ruled out his departure for the right fee.

The Nerazzurri are eyeing around €50 million for the former PSV star and it is claimed that the Blues could meet the figure.

Chelsea are currently without James for two months with a knee injury.

The hierarchy want to balance his workload in future and are prepared to rest him when necessary to avoid similar injuries.
