The Argentine suffered the setback in the 2-2 draw against Sevilla in midweek and United have now confirmed his long-term absence.

The centre-back will require an operation for the same and this is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The news is a huge blow for the Red Devils, considering Raphael Varane picked up a foot injury of his own in the same game.

Varane has been ruled out for the next few weeks but reports claim that the World Cup winner may not play again this campaign.

In their absence, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are widely expected to step up to the starting XI and have a huge job ahead.

They have been inconsistent with their displays for some time and have the chance to redeem themselves in the coming weeks.

United face Nottingham Forest on the road tomorrow.
