Man Utd were keen on signing PSG star - Romano

21 September 2023 - 20:33

Manchester United were keen on landing Xavi Simons from PSV Eindhoven during the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

  • Chelsea set £35m price to sell 20-goal striker
  • Arsenal considered favourites to sign Leipzig striker

  • The Red Devils were looking to bolster their frontline in the recent window and a new winger was a potential target for the Premier League side.

Simons was a top choice for manager Erik ten Hag, but United's plans were shattered after Paris Saint-Germain activated the buy-back clause.

The Dutchman still had the choice to turn them down, but he accepted to rejoin PSG. The youngster is currently on loan with RB Leipzig.

Speaking to The United Stand, Romano confirmed that Ten Hag wanted Simons at Old Trafford, but PSG scuppered the club's transfer plans.

"Erik ten Hag was really keen on (bringing) Xavi Simons to Manchester United, but then PSG triggered the buy-back clause they had in the contract with PSV Eindhoven," he said.

The 20-year-old has had a tremendous start to his Bundesliga career with three goals and four assists from just six appearances in all competitions.

Leipzig are already considering the option of signing him permanently. PSG bought him back for €6m, but he will cost a significant fee next summer.
