Manchester United are reportedly planning a January approach to sign Sebastian Caceres from Mexican side Club America.
The Red Devils were keen on signing a quality centre-back in the last transfer window, but it did not happen in the end.
Their plans were dependent on Harry Maguire heading for the exit door, but the Englishman had no desire to do so.
The club landed Jonny Evans on a free transfer to add more depth, but they could invest on a low-cost option this winter.
The Red Devils have been monitoring Caceres for a number of weeks and they could attempt to land him in the New Year.
Caceres, who is now a regular starter with Uruguay, could be allowed to leave the Mexican giants for a small fee of £4.1m.
Aside from United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also keen on signing the highly-rated star from Uruguay.
Benfica and Ajax are among European clubs that are also keeping tabs on the 24-year-old ahead of the January window.
