Manchester United explored a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils were keen on landing multiple centre-backs this summer and they looked at different options in the transfer market.
The club eventually signed Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt from Lille and Bayern, but their plans were apparently different.
United were aiming to reunite Romero with Lisandro Martinez at club level, having played together for Argentina with good success in recent years.
However, it became evident that Spurs would not entertain any bids.
United therefore turned their attention to Yoro and managed to convince him to join them amid strong interest from Real Madrid.
Yoro picked up an unfortunate foot injury in pre-season and he is not expected to make his Red Devils debut until November.
De Ligt, meanwhile, has had a good start to his United career, and he will be hoping to impress further after the international break.
