Manchester United and Newcastle United are interested in signing Barcelona wonderkid Marc Bernal, according to ESPN Deportes.
The 17-year-old made his first-team debut for the Catalan giants this term. He started in the opening three games before suffering a serious knee injury.
The teenager is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign, but United and Newcastle are still willing to pay his £16.5 million release clause.
Both clubs have made contact with the player's representatives over a move when he turns 18 next year, but he is unlikely to be persuaded.
Bernal does not want to move abroad at such an early stage in his playing career and he is set to commit his long-term future to Barcelona.
The Catalan giants have already discussed terms with the defensive midfielder and an agreement could be confirmed by this week.
The news is a huge setback for United and Newcastle, who were hoping to lure the youngster after his fantastic breakthrough this season.
