Chelsea star Levi Colwill has been ruled out for several months after undergoing surgery for an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury.
The England international has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and recently helped the Blues win the Club World Cup.
Colwill recently returned to the Blues after a much-needed break, but he unfortunately picked up a serious injury in the first training session.
The centre-back has now been ruled out for a substantial period of time.
The Blues may not pursue a replacement for the Englishman, considering new signing Jorrel Hato started his career as a central defender at Ajax.
Hato played exclusively from the left-back role for Ajax last season, but he was primarily a central defender coming through the academy ranks.
While Colwill has now been sidelined, the Blues have received a timely boost with Wesley Fofana back in training after a long-term absence.
The French centre-back will be hoping to stay unscathed next term.
