Arsenal decided to sign Viktor Gyokeres instead of Benjamin Sesko for a big reason, according to The Athletic.
The Gunners were initially keen on landing the signature of Sesko from RB Leipzig and talks were ongoing with the Bundesliga outfit for several weeks.
However, there was no progress whatsoever. Arsenal had no plans of paying the reported €85m fee and eventually opted to land Gyokeres from Sporting CP.
The Athletic now claim that the Gunners were reluctant to pay over the odds for any player under the recommendation of sporting director Andrea Berta.
Berta was banging the drum the hardest for Gyokeres and got his man. The €73.5m deal was deemed good due to the Swede's track record and experience.
Sesko still ended up in the Premier League with United. While Gyokeres has already scored a couple of goals, Sesko has yet to open his account for United.
The Slovenian will be aiming to do so after the international break.
