Chelsea midfielder Dario Essugo has underwent surgery for a thigh injury sustained on international duty.
The 20-year-old signed for the Blues from Sporting CP last summer, but he has yet to make his debut. He has been an unused substitute in the first three games of the Premier League campaign.
Essugo will have to wait longer for his Blues debut after his setback in training for the Portugal Under-21s. Essugo is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after a successful operation.
Chelsea presently have Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo as their regulars in the centre of the park, but the latter missed the recent game for Ecuador with a minor problem.
They still have good depth in the department. Andrey Santos can comfortably play in the heart of the midfield while Reece James could slot in the position too if required.
Chelsea take on Brentford on the road in a London derby this weekend. They face Bayern in their first Champions League game of the campaign soon after.
