Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes when the transfer window reopens in the New Year, according to the Daily Mail.
The Red Devils primarily focused on strengthening their attacking department during the summer, having signed Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo.
The focus could turn to defensive recruits next year and reports claim that a marquee holding midfielder is one of the top priorities for manager Ruben Amorim this winter.
United have been heavily linked with names such as Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, but it is now claimed that they hold an interest in landing Gomes from Wolves.
Gomes was a top target for Liverpool during his time in Brazilian football before his move to Wolves. He could seek a bigger challenge away from the Midlands outfit soon.
With Wolves languishing in the drop zone, it remains to be seen whether they consider a proposal from United during the winter transfer window.
