Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is leading the club's pursuit of Elche midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza ahead of the New Year, according to Football Insider.
The Gunners have made a brilliant start to the league campaign and part of the credit has gone to Berta for a superb summer spending spree where eight players were signed.
Almost every player has had an impact in the early months of the season and Berta has his sights on landing Mendoza from Elche when the transfer window reopens.
The 20-year-old has been likened to Cesc Fabregas for his playing style in La Liga and he has been touted to pursue a bigger challenge in January or the season end.
He has a release clause worth €20 million in his deal and the Gunners could be prepared to pay the amount as early as January to avoid more interest in his services.
Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on his situation and Arsenal may need to be quick to try and persuade the youngster to join them this winter.
