Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez underwent successful surgery after his jaw fracture against Everton last weekend.
The Argentine sustained the setback during the second half of the Premier League game last week and was replaced by Mike Penders after receiving medical attention.
Martinez has since undergone an operation for his fractured jaw and reports claim that he could be on the sidelines for around six to eight weeks.
The World Cup winner's absence is a genuine blow for the Blues, who have picked up just a solitary clean sheet across all competitions this term.
However, it also offers Penders the opportunity to prove his credentials. He is regarded as one of Belgium's best upcoming shot-stoppers.
Chelsea will face Tottenham Hotspur at home in the Premier League this weekend. They should be favourites to pick up a win.
The Blues are currently fourth in the standings with 13 points, eight behind leaders Manchester City, who have made the perfect start.
