Turkey dump hosts out

Turkey dump hosts out

11 June 2008 - 20:47

Newcastle target Arda Turan left it late to dump co-hosts Switzerland out of the Euro 2008 tournament. Fatih Terim masterminded a brilliant 2-1 victory for Turkey, after Semih pulled a goal back despite Switzerland taking an early lead through Yakin.

  • Chelsea ready to sell four home-grown players
  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts

  • It was a wet, windy game in Switzerland, with the pitch and the players feeling the effects of the downpour.

The first twenty minutes were some of the most dismal football so far of the tournament.

But Swiss striker Yakin finally broke the deadlock in the first half as he struck home to make up amends for a glaring miss earlier.

The game was really starting to heat up as tackles were flying all over the pitch.

After half time, Turkey pulled their way back into the game after Semih levelled things with a great header from a wonderful cross from the left.

Turkey had some great opportunities and looked the better side, but continued to ignore Newcastle target Arda Turan on the left.

The Swiss defence were continually trying to play Turkey offside, and Magnin looked a big culprit. Senderos also tried desperately at times to play the offside rule, but Turkey looked dangerous.

Turkey then brought on former Sheff Utd striker Colin Kazim Richards; knowing full well that a Turkish victory would end the tournament for Switzerland.

Switzerland then tried to go for the win, they threw everyone forward and Derdiyok had a great chance when there was 3 strikers on one, the ball bounced off Derdiyok into the path of Yakin; who fired straight at Volkan in the Turkey goal.

Now in Group A, Switzerland are out of the tournament as Turkey and Czech Republic look set to battle for second spot. Portugal have already qualified.
