Atletico Madrid are reportedly preparing a formal approach for Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino at the turn of the year.
The Madrid giants have had a good start to the La Liga campaign, and they are currently just two points behind Barcelona for the top spot.
Despite this, manager Diego Simeone is desperate for more quality in the centre of the park, given the club's struggles in the Champions League.
Merino was a top target for the La Liga giants before his switch to the Gunners, and Atletico seem prepared to try again in January.
The World Cup winner recently said that he is clearly happy with his time at the Gunners despite becoming a regular substitute option.
Still, there is speculation that Merino could entertain a return to La Liga during the back end of his career, and Atletico could tempt him.
The Gunners have no plans of parting ways with the 30-year-old unless he personally pushes to pursue a new challenge this winter.
