Unfamiliar territory for Bayern

20 September 2007 - 16:19

Bayern Munich tonight begin their UEFA Cup campaign in unfamiliar territory. The German giants last won the Champions League in 2001, but will play this season in the UEFA Cup after finishing 4th in the Bundesliga.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • "I think it's a real shame we're not competing this season. But we made our own beds last season and we've received the appropriate punishment," general manager Uli Hoeneß said.

"So there's no point wringing our hands, it's a sporting setback and we have to live with it. I do believe it'll be a one-season intermission, and we'll be back in the competition next term."

Bayern are already top of the league in Germany as they begin their campaign to push for the Bundesliga title, and the addition of Luca Toni and Franck Ribery will certainly improve their chances this season.
