Torres and Alonso doubtful

06 February 2009 - 17:41

Rafael Benitez said that he will have to wait until the last moment to decide if Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres would start. The Spanish duo have slight injury worries and Rafa might not want to risk losing them for the future matches.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso limped off in the second half of the extra time against Everton, and, striker Fernando Torres was tired and substituted in the 101st minute.

Xabi Alonso has injured his ankle, and might not play against Portsmouth on Saturday. Fernando Torres is fit, but, is tired by playing too many matches.

Liverpool boss, Rafael Benitez, said that his players were playing two games in a week which is a lot to ask from them. He said that the players need rest, and if that is not possible, they might get injured too soon.

He said that Torres is clearly tried and he would wait till late in the training day to make a decision. All the players are a little bit tired so we have to make decisions - Torres will be one of the big decisions.

Liverpool already have midfielder Lucas Leiva and Degen in the injured list.
