Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has confirmed that he shall be staying on at the club beyond the summer, thereby squashing all rumours of him moving elsewhere.

Atletico Madrid confirmed their fourth place finish at the weekend and shall play UEFA Champions League football next season. Uruguayan international striker Forlan has been one of the best and most consistent players for Atletico this season and his assurance of playing at the Vicente Calderon certainly boosts Atleti.

Diergo Forlan said:

“(Sergio) Aguero and I have a contract. Of course we will stay. I am very happy in this beautiful town and in this big club.

“What happened to us is very beautiful. It is time to enjoy, not to seek news. Those that have to talk, will talk, but now it is time to celebrate.”

This is excellent news for Atletico, the third biggest club in Spain back in the top tier of European club competition after 11 difficult years. Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan have developed one of the best striker partnerships in La Liga this season and they staying together would only bring more success to Atletico.

Both Aguero and Forlan have been subjects of intense speculation of moving out of the Calderon at the end of the season. Atletico coach Javier Aguirre too is under some speculation to depart from the Madrid club in the summer but for the moment Atletico Madrid are basking in hype and expectation.
