Torres rescues Anfield point

Torres rescues Anfield point

07 October 2007 - 16:23

It looked like the unthinkable might happen and Liverpool may be defeated at Anfield twice in a row - but - thanks to Fernando Torres scoring in the last minute, the points were shared. Tottenham continue to languish at the bottom of the league and Martin Jol looks set to hang on to his job for a little longer.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Liverpool went ahead after Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson spilt a Gerrard free-kick and Voronin was there to pick up on the rebound. Paul Robinson seems to be worryingly inept in goal at the moment, a worry that may be addressed by England boss Steve McLaren.

On the half-hour Gerrard was unlucky not to score when his curling free-kick cannoned back off the post.

A sweeping move involving Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Voronin dissected the Spurs defence but the Ukraine forward elected to pass rather shoot and the opportunity to score passed.

Liverpool missed several chances and were made to pay for that as Berbatov flicked a header on which released Keane, who clipped the ball past Jose Reina.

After half time the Berbatov-Keane combo worked wonders again as the Bulgarian's flick was knocked on to the Irishman who acrobatically smashed the ball past Reina.

It stayed 2-1 until the last minute, when Tottenham's poor luck this season continued as Fernando Torres stepped up when Finnan crossed from the right, then the Spaniard headed the ball past Robinson to give Liverpool the draw.
