Man Utd boss admits he nearly signed RvP

Ahead of Manchester United's crunch Premier League game with Arsenal today, Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that the Red Devils very nearly signed Robin van Persie. The Dutch striker was watched in action by United when he still played for his former club Feyenoord.

  • Arsenal went on to sign van Persie from the Dutch side for around 3 million GBP, but the story could have been much different had Ferguson made a move for the striker back then.

Ferguson said: "I remember going to see Van Persie play for Feyenoord reserves, way, way back.

"We were definitely interested, but the day we went to see him he didn't play the full game.

"He was either sent off or he walked off, I can't remember which. We ended up leaving it, we didn't make a move for him.

"I don't think we saw enough of him to make a decision, whereas Arsenal were much closer to the situation at the time and they eventually got themselves a terrific player."
