Bellamy angry at Wales fans

Bellamy angry at Wales fans

18 October 2007 - 19:18

Wales striker Craig Bellamy has slammed the abuse the Wales fans gave the team after the team scraped past San Marino 2-1. Bellamy labelled some of the chants from the fans as 'vicious'.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • "That was one of the most vicious crowds I have played in front of for Wales," said Bellamy. "You could hear it on the pitch, some of the personal stuff was vicious and collectively the abuse was vicious. When they are singing 'you are not fit to wear the shirt', a lot of the young players found it hard.

"It was very harsh and some of the worst I have been involved in. I have heard it before playing for Wales, but not to that level."

Bellamy added: "Some comments beforehand did not help. As an individual what I heard aimed at me on the pitch was disappointing, I think I deserve a little better than that.

"For me, you end up thinking 'why am I here?'. I could easily have shelved these last two games. I have always played for my country.

"People can criticise me, and they do, about other things. But one thing they cannot criticise is my attitude to my country and what I do for my country."
