It's been eight years since Arsenal last won a trophy and year after year the best players keep leaving - now the fans have started demanding success. Will Arsene Wenger finally spend the money we know the club has, or will it be yet another quiet summer for the Gunners?
I don't know about you, but I'm worried. Manchester United have already signed Guillermo Varela and look set to secure a move for the excellent central defender Ezequiel Garay. Chelsea have brought in Jose Mourinho, we've seen what he likes to do in the transfer market... expect there to be at least three new arrivals in the coming weeks. Then, Manchester City have already been busy after signing Jesus Navas from Sevilla. Liverpool, still a contender for the title at the very least, have also signed Kolo Toure and look set to agree a deal to bring Iago Aspas to Anfield. What have we seen from Arsenal so far?
The atmosphere at Arsenal is quite strange. Many fans will stick with Arsene Wenger because of the success he brought to the club when he arrived, let's not forget how close the Gunners were to winning the Champions League. The famous "Arsene Knows Best" fan club will seemingly stick with Wenger through thick and thin. Then, the seemingly polar opposite, the Arsenal fans who are demanding change at the club and many are insisting that "Wenger Must Go". We've got the AKB's and the WMG's... the Arsenal fans really are an opinionated lot.
One thing that both sets of supporters will agree on, there must be transition at the Emirates. The very core of the club must change both on the pitch and off it. The board members are losing the faith of their supporters, as seen in many Arsenal Supporter's Trust meetings over the last 12 months. Even more so on the pitch, as well. The Arsenal defence did show, at times, some good performances at the back end of the season just past; but the middle of the park and our strikers must be changed. There needs to be some new blood. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have massive potential, but boy how Arsenal could do with a Gilberto Silva in the ranks; an experienced head sorting out the youthful inexperience this pairing often show.
All of the above cannot disguise the fact that fourth place finish has become a trophy for these frustrated fans. This isn't good enough for any of them.
Almost all Arsenal fans will be hoping that Wenger does not wait until transfer deadline day to bring in new players, much like he did when he signed Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta. It's already beginning to look that way.
Or, it might not be that kind of quiet summer. It might be another one of Arsene Wenger's favourite summer's, where he has scoured France and Africa taking a punt on some of the best young talent these areas has to offer. Yaya Sanogo looks to be on his way to the Emirates. Could this be Wenger's plan? It's already beginning to look that way, too.
One thing is for sure though - this is probably Arsene Wenger's last chance to prove himself and his policies - he needs to get it right and he must start signing new players.
