Arsenal in swap deal for Marseilles playmaker

Arsenal in swap deal for Marseille's playmaker

17 June 2013 - 13:17

Following reports in France that Marseille have expressed an interest in Arsenal’s Gervinho, it has evolved that the Gunners boss will be looking for a swap deal offer for Marseille star Mathieu Valbuena.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • Gervinho has been a big flop at the Emirates since his move from Lille, but Marseille believe that he still has the tricks in his sleeve to succeed in the French Ligue 1.

Lyon have also been monitoring the Ivorian who has scored just 11 goals in his last two seasons with the Gunners but Arsenal will look to invoke a deal with Marseille as they are interested in Valbuena.

Valbuena is one of the best midfield playmakers in the French national team. He has scored 14 goals and provided 30 assists in the last two seasons and would surely fit into Arsenal’s style of play.

The Gunners boss will be hoping that an offer of a player-plus-cash deal would be enough to entice Marseille in allowing Valbuena an exit route.

Marseille finished as runners-up last season in the French Ligue 1 to PSG and wouldnot want to lose their players due to the high competition for places especially with promotion of As Monaco from Ligue 2.

However, Valbuena will be willing to make a move inorder to strengthen his chances of a place in the World Cup squad if the French national team qualify.
