Xabi Alonso Rules Out Premier League Return

08 July 2013 - 20:50

Premier League target Xabi Alonso has ruled out all such speculations that link him with a move back to the League. Liverpool and Chelsea were the biggest suitors for the 31-year-old but the player leaves them disappointed.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Ex-Blancos boss Jose Mourinho was keen on reuniting with Xabi Alonso at the Stamford Bridge and former club Liverpool were also speculated to be a preferred destination for Alonso.

When asked about a reunion with new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, Alonso was quoted saying:

"The Premier League? No. No way no chance”

Xabi Alonso joined Liverpool in 2004 when Rafael Benitez signed him into the squad to play alongside the likes of captain Steven Gerrard. His addition to the squad was an instant success as the Reds lifted the Champions League trophy, with the Spaniard scoring in the final.

After falling out of favour with Rafael Benitez, Alonso made a move back home at the Bernabeu in 2009 where he was a key asset under Jose Mourinho’s reign. Mourinho looked to capitalize on his relations with the Spaniard but Xabi has completely ruled out any possibility for a Premier League switch.

Xabi’s present contract with Real Madrid ends next year in June so speculations over his future are unlikely to stop.
