Newcastle and Everton are both in the race to sign Wigan's midfielder James McCarthy. The 22-year-old central midfielder played yesterday during Wigan's first game of the season in the Championship, but the former Hamilton Academical player is expected to quit the Latics before the end of the transfer window.

  • Mccarthy made a move to Wigan in 2009 and has since gone on to prove himself an important member of the first team, whilst he has also been a regular for the Ireland national team in recent years. Everton and Newcastle are both ready to make a mega money bid for the 22-year-old.

Joe Kinnear, Newcastle's director of football, has already been in contact with Wigan regarding the player whilst Everton manager Roberto Martinez has also spoken with his former chairman at Wigan regarding a move for the player.

McCarthy will complete a move at the end of August, according to reports.
