Besiktas to hijack move for Liverpool target Melgarejo

11 August 2013 - 09:45

Turkish giants Besiktas want to hijack Liverpool's move for defensive starlet Lorenzo Melgarejo. The left back had been almost certain to join the Anfield side, but at the last minute a deal fell through as the Paraguayan wanted a permanent transfer and the guarantee of regular first team football.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • Currently based in Portugal with Benfica, Melgarejo is a very highly rated defender but has been told he is free to leave his current club. Liverpool had hoped to secure his signing already, but after being told he would play second fiddle to Jose Enrique under Brendan Rodgers, Melgarejo decided against a move to England. The defender has told his agent that he must play regular first team football to ensure he has a chance of playing at the World Cup next summer.

Enter Besiktas, who have now tabled a 5 million Euro bid and also have told Melgarejo's representatives he will be a crucial member of the first team. The Paraguayan's agent will fly to Turkey for talks this week.
