Sunderland continue transfer spree as Greek winger joins club

22 August 2013 - 15:22

Premier League club Sunderland have continued their summer spending spree after signing Greek winger Charis Mavrias from Panathinaikos for a rumored sum of £3 million.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • Mavrias, 29, becomes the 11th signing for the Black Cats this summer completing a major overhaul at the Stadium of Light.

Manager Paolo di Canio had insisted earlier that the club were not done with their transfers this summer but added the budgetary constraints may prevent him fro spending any further. However, within days Sunderland announced having made their 11th new acquisition this summer lending a completely different look to the squad.

Di Canio told the Sunderland Echo: "Until a player signs, I would prefer not to say too much about them.

"But what do I know about Mavrias? I know him, I know that he is a very good prospect, I know that he's a very exciting player.

"But I don't want to talk about him, or any more about what was said about (Stephane) Sessegnon at the weekend because things you say about transfers can easily cause problems and confusion, so I would prefer to wait and see."
